Western Cape - The Winelands Golf Club Details

Arabella Golf Estate, Kleinmond

Maintaining the balance between man and nature was foremost in the development of the Championship golf course on the 'Beautiful Land', with its rolling, undulating terrain. Peter Matkovich (of Matkovich & Hayes Golf Design) has ensured that 18 holes encompass the mountain backdrops, lagoon frontage and forests on the estate. These provide for links, parkland and coastal aspects, while the individual fairways provide natural corridors as vantage points to savor nature's true beauty. Challenging enough to bring you back for more, enjoyable enough to make you not want to leave.

Stellenbosch Golf Club, Stellenbosch

One of the best golf courses in South Africa. This championship course which hosted, among other tournaments, the South African Masters and South African Open, will test your golfing skills. Stellenbosch lies in the centre of the fertile and very scenic wine growing area of the Cape, less than an hour's drive out of Cape Town. With its numerous diligently restored buildings in the Cape Dutch style and its renowned university, it is one of the most attractive travel destinations at the Cape. Just as rewarding is a visit to the town's exclusive golf course situated just out of town amid vineyards. The course is - compared to those in Cape Town and on the Cape Peninsula - well protected from the wind. The - relatively narrow - fairways are lined with trees. Hole 8 (Par 5) requires for instance an absolutely straight stroke in order for the ball not to land in vines or bushes.

Erinvale Golf Club, Winelands

Erinvale hosted the 1996 World Cup of Golf where participants found the course both a golfing challenge and a visual delight. The Erinvale Golf Club is a private club where guests of the Hotel play as members. Erinvale is also a real estate development where homes blend well into the landscape. The 1st nine holes are built on flat terrain with challenging holes made more difficult by strategic water hazards and an array of different style bunkers. These range from traditional large, well-shaped bunkers to some with railway sleepers holding up steep, sandy slopes. The 2nd nine holes are on undulating high ground. Here the scenic splendor might distract the players from the continuing challenge. Again, water and bunkers are the main features with the added test of sloping lies.

Langebaan Country Estate, Langebaan

Founding members of the golf club tell the story that prior to 1987, regular visitors and local residents found it amusing that a golf course was to be planned for Langebaan. In the late 1990's the first nine holes were opened, with a stiff southeaster blowing. The second nine holes, with a signature 18th hole (which requires a tricky second shot over the dam), was opened to players a year later. The course was designed as a championship course and is very challenging for the high and low handicapper.

Pearl Valley Signature Golf Estate, Franschhoek

In the history of golf - and golf course design - no man has achieved more than Jack Nicklaus. Universally acknowledged as the 'Golfer of the Century', his understanding of the game - and the course - is unequaled. His reputation as a hands-on designer is clearly evident at Pearl Valley. He sees is as a sum of his knowledge, representing almost 50 years of international competition and decades of designing many of the world's most famous courses. In its engineering and planning detail, the course is very rare. It is crossed by roads in only three places, and the drainage system allows play to continue just minutes after a severe cloudburst.
